Aiming to accelerate the countrys railway services the government has decided to set up infrastructure for introducing 200-kilometer speed electric train. This train, along with making a faster journey, will also be fuel-efficient. The locomotive will be connected straight to the power supply line adjacent to the rail track. Moreover, the locomotives and the rail lines will be upgraded targeting smooth ply of the electric train on 200 KM/h speed.Sources from Ministry of Railway informed these to banglanews. The source informed that keeping in mind the probable load-shedding, the train will run on both electricity and diesel making the journey uninterrupted. But the diesel will notch down the speed considerably. Initially the cost of plying the electric train has been estimated at Tk 958 crore. The source asserted that if the Narayanganj-Dhaka-Chittagong route trains get through the electrification procedure 200 km journey will be easy in per hour which to be a new milestone for the railway department.
The high-speed electric train will cut travel time as well as operational costs and increase benefits to passengers.Narayanganj is one of the most important centers for trade-business in the country, whereas, Chittagong Port handles 90% of the import-export business. Some 30% of the total population of Bangladesh live in Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chittagong. Availability of electricity made these areas potential for the first for electric trains.
Secretary of the Ministry of Railway Firoz Slahuddin informed banglanews This is the first time for us to launch electric train in Bangladesh this will be a milestone for the ministry. This will be incredibly fuel-efficient. We have seen many countries getting interest in introducing electric trains. Initially the speed will be 150 KM/h which to be upgraded once the electrification is completed. He said that these trains are more load capable environmentb friendly and cost-efficient. It will consume 4 units of electricity to cross 1 Kilometer. If one unit costs 10 taka, 1 KM will cost only Tk 40 whereas diesel run trains need more than Tk 1000 per KM.The secretary further said that the feasibility test of this project has already been conducted successfully. The project will be implemented under the project of Traction construction from Narayanganj to Chittagong via Dhaka. The cost of the project is estimated at Tk 958 crore.
Ministry of Railway has already sent a summary of the project to the Ministry of Planning. On the other hand, the Ministry of Planning is going to hold a meeting of Project Evaluation Committee at 10,00 am on January 31.The tender will be floated after approval of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council ECNEC Ministry of Railway additional secretary Planning and Development Shashi Kumar Shingh informed banglanews about these latest update of the project.
